It was in 2014 that they began looking for land next to the Douro River, neither too close nor too far from Porto. The goal was to find a ruin to to restore and transform into a country house that would allow the family to join together on holidays and weekends, besides celebrating all the festive moments of family and friends.
That same year, in the middle of summer, they discovered an online ad for a 13,000m2 property, just with an image of a ruin, by the Douro river, at 50 minutes from Porto and in the city the birthplace of a singer and actress who, very young, emigrated to Brazil: Carmen Miranda. On a family trip, they traveled to Marco de Canaveses, more precisely Penha Longa. The path proved to be an adventure but the journey was worth it.
From the entrance gate of the property, a small ruin was visible in the middle of the land and the magnificent mountains that protected the Douro River. The connection was instant, and the search ended.
"The sunlight was everywhere and we felt that our place was there."
On October 1 st 2014 it started. Dreams and projects began to take shape using the labor of the land, municipality companies, materials and products from the region. Nine months later, the work was completed and then the idea of using it as a tourist attraction came up.
In 2016 Quinta de Cabanas Douro Country House opened to guests. It did not take long until reservations were coming and they never stopped.
Today, Rui & Elizabete are totally devoted to the Quinta de Cabanas Douro Country House project, taking advantage of their specific knowledge of the sector.
Since then, more fields were acquired and the projects are growing. The installation of a vineyard is underway 3.5 hectares and an increase in the number of accommodation units, as well as the creation of spaces exclusively for events, as a rooftop for wine tasting or sunset events and a platform with a lake for holding outdoor events overlooking the Douro River.
“We thank everyone who has visited us to date and who encouraged us to do more and better. We are welcoming everyone with open arms for everyone and we hope you stay with us, come back and recommend. ”
